The Impact of Unresolved Mother-Child Relationships on Adulthood

We all know that the relationship between a mother and child lays the foundation for the child’s emotional development. But what happens when there are unresolved issues or conflicts between a mother and child that carry on into adulthood? In my latest video, I explore the concept of “mommy issues” — how emotional difficulties from childhood with a mother can negatively impact an individual later in life.

Here are five common signs that someone may be struggling with “Mommy Issues”:

1. Difficulty setting boundaries — Rigid or overly lenient boundaries in childhood makes it hard to set healthy boundaries as an adult. This can lead to problems saying no and putting one’s own needs first.

2. Constantly seeking validation — Due to lack of nurturing and affection from their mother’s, adults with mommy issues may constantly seek reassurance from romantic partners. This can strain relationships.

3. Severe codependency — Overly protective mothers can cause children to expect partners and others to overly care for their needs in adulthood. This overwhelms romantic relationships.

4. Emotional enmeshment — Enmeshed mother-child relationships prevent children from developing their own emotions and identities. This causes strain for adult children expected to ensure their mother’s happiness.

5. Difficulty trusting others — Fear of abandonment and lack of vulnerability from childhood problems with mothers leads to issues trusting and committing to partners.

In this video I discuss how many adult children with mommy issues resort to avoiding conflict altogether due to their pasts! Bringing consciousness to this topic is the first step in healing unresolved conflicts from childhood for a happier, healthier adulthood.

Remember that you are worthy of love, respect, and happiness, regardless of the challenges you may face!

Until next time, stay well and take care….
